If you asked everyone in the country what their biggest fear is, the majority will tell you it’s speaking in public. So many people are afraid to just stand in front of a group of people and talk. Why is that? They think they’ll make fools of themselves. They start to worry about making a mistake, and then they do. Then they try to get back on track but then start worrying about how they’re speaking. One thing will lead to another and the speech will come out terrible. That’s why so many people are afraid, it’s very easy to look like a fool.
There are some tips for when you’re speaking in public. Forget the whole imagine people in their underwear thing, that’ll just get you laughing or get you excited. What you have to do is make sure you’re comfortable with your speech. Practice saying it in front of a mirror. Make sure you read it aloud several times. This is so you mentally prepare yourself so you don’t stumble over words. Also, if you can, try and write down some of the main points and have them sitting in front of you. Maybe your first few lines or some long sentences, You should also try giving the speech in front of a few friends. Whatever you do, make sure you’re well prepared when delivering your speech.
No matter how prepared you are, you still may make a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. If you get tongue-tied while you’re speaking just stop and take a deep breath. Then continue as you were. If you have to just say something like, “Excuse me, I’m a little nervous.” The people in the audience will understand, they’ve probably been in your position before. One of the worse things to think is that people are bored. Don’t focus yourself about what they think. They might all have bored looks on their faces, but just wait until the end. Listen to the applause. Remember, they’re just human…and so are you.
